Modeling and analysis of mobility management state of packet-switched (PS) services in GPRS

چکیده
There has been an increasing demand for wireless data services due to the popularity of Internet services and circuit-switched (CS) systems are not appropriate for accommodating bursty data traffic. The wireless data services can be efficiently supported in the packet-switched (PS) system and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a representative PS system which is being serviced widely. In GPRS, three mobile station (MS) mobility management states, i.e., idle, ready, and standby are defined in order to accommodate bursty traffic characteristics of data services, and thus, GPRS results in efficient management of radio resources and signaling networks. In order to analyze the performance of GPRS mobility management, we develop an analytical model to derive the steady-state probability of the MS states, which is essential in the performance analysis. The analytical model is validated by using a simulation model. The effect of various input parameters on the steady-state probability and the effect of variances of cell residence time, RA residence time, and packet transmission time are analyzed. Then, location update signaling and paging signaling loads are investigated based on the steady-state probability. Our study provides guideline for proper selection of PS system parameters and can be used to analyze the performance of mobility management schemes for PS systems. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Modeling and Performance Analysis of an Improved Movement-Based Location Management Scheme for Packet-Switched Mobile Communication Systems
One of the key technologies to support mobility of mobile station (MS) in mobile communication systems is location management which consists of location update and paging. In this paper, an improved movement-based location management scheme with two movement thresholds is proposed, considering bursty data traffic characteristics of packet-switched (PS) services. The analytical modeling for loca...

متن کاملAdaptive Radio Resource Management for GSM/GPRS Networks
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in demand for mobile communication services and with the introduction of 2.5G services such as GPRS, this trend is expected to increase further. The highly dynamic and bursty nature of packet switched services such as GPRS will require a much more flexible method of radio resource management so as to maximise system resources compared to currently empl...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of the General Packet Radio Service
This paper presents an efficient and accurate analytical model for the radio interface of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) in a GSM network. The model is utilized for investigating how many packet data channels should be allocated for GPRS under a given amount of traffic in order to guarantee appropriate quality of service. The presented model constitutes a continuous-time Markov chain. ...
متن کاملChannel Allocation for GPRS with Buffering Mechanisms
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) provides mobile users end-to-end packet-switched services by sharing the radio channels with voice and circuit-switched services. In such a system, radio resource allocation for circuit-switched and packet-switched services is an important issue, which may affect the QoS for both services significantly. In this paper, we propose two algorithms: Dynamic Resour...
